Faith of the Heart - 스타트렉 엔터프라이즈 오프닝송

아주 좋아하는 노래 중에 하나인 "Faith of the Heart"는 유명 TV 시리즈 스타트렉 엔터프라이즈 (Star Trek Enterprise)의 오프닝송으로 사용된 노래입니다.

 

 

원래는 1998년 로빈 윌리엄스 (Robin Williams)가 주연한 영화 패치 아담즈 (Patch Adams)의 주제가로 사용되었다고 하는군요. 저는 이 영화를 보지 않았는데 이 영화에서는 유명한 가수 로드 스튜워트 (Rod Stewart)가 "Faith of the Heart"를 불렀습니다.

 

2001년-2005년까지 스타트렉 엔터프라이스 TV 시리즈에 이 노래가 오프닝송으로 사용되었는데 이 노래는 영국출신 테너 러셀 왓슨 (Russell Watson)이 로드 스튜워트 같은 목소리 느낌을 내면서 멋지게 불렀어요.

 

원노래는 약 4분 20초 정도의 길이인데 스타트렉 엔터프라이즈 오프닝송에서는 시간관계상 약 2분 정도로 줄인 버전으로 사용되었습니다.

 

 

엔터프라이즈 오프닝송으로 사용하면서 노래 제목을 "Where My Heart Will Take Me"로 바꿨습니다. 하지만 아직도 많은 사람들은 원제목이었던 “Faith of the Heart”로 부르길 좋아합니다. 저 역시 "Faith of the Heart"라는 제목이 더 좋아요.

 

처음 스타트렉 엔터프라이즈에서 "Faith of the Heart"를 오프닝송으로 사용했을 때 스타트렉 팬들 사이에서 난리가 났었어요.

스타트렉 오프닝송은 전통적으로 클래식 분위기의 음악을 사용하는데 뜬금없이 웬 대중음악 스타일이냐?
전혀 어울리지 않으니 바꿔야 한다!

 

라고 주장하는가 하면 다른 한편에서는,

노래도 너무 좋고 참신한 시도다!

 

이렇게 호불호가 쫙 갈렸습니다.

 

이런 팬들의 반응이 신경 쓰였는지 시즌 3부터는 "Faith of the Heart"의 반주 비트를 좀 빨리해서 경쾌한 느낌이 나게 약간의 변경을 시도했습니다. 그랬더니 이번에는 “예전 비트가 더 낫다”와 “새로운 반주가 더 좋다”로 또 양극의 반응이 나왔어요. 스타트렉이 워낙 인기 있는 TV 시리즈다 보니까 뭘 해도 말이 참 많습니다.

 

 

저는 빠른 비트의 노래도 기존의 비트 노래도 다 좋게 들립니다.

 

아래에 4분여짜리 원곡의 "Faith of Heart"를 붙였습니다. 이 비디오에서는 우주선을 우주로 보내기 위해 그 오랜 세월동안 인간이 해온 여러 관찰, 연구, 실험 등을 모았어요. 우주로 진출하기 위한 꿈, 열정, 추진력, 포기하지 않는 도전 등등. 이런 역사들을 간단하게나마 쭉 보게 되면 인간으로 인류에 대한 자부심을 느낍니다.

 

 

"Faith of the Heart"의 가사가 참 좋습니다. 특히 두꺼운 글씨체로 표시한 부분의 가사가 너무너무 맘에 들어요. 힘들고 지칠 때 이 가사를 생각해 보면 힘을 얻기도 해요.
